BSnow got a HVIF icon

Filed under: Graphics — Meanwhile @ 5:40 pm

BSnow

Read about it here

Background info: With Haiku ‘getting more eyes’ already at this stage in development, I thought there was a need to replace the old BSnow icon, which was charming in a way, but stood out for not being 3D, nor being HVIF.
Since my vector drawing skills are almost non-existant at this moment, for a long time I hoped others would replace it. Then it occured to me that with a simple colour-change from the Generic App icon, there’d be an icon having a nice reference to what shows up on the bottom of your screen after running BSnow for a while: stacked white squares.
Of course, by changing nothing other than colour, the new icon was guaranteed to blend in well with the existing HVIF iconset.

Icon-O-Matic turned out to be really user friendly, so after only a short time of fiddling with colour- and gradient settings, the first version was ‘already ready’. (If you look carefully, the first version’s top cube side has a wrong -inverted- gradient)
In the end I considered ‘BSnow6′ suitable for inclusion in Haiku.

Hope you’ll like it…at least it was fun doing.

Looking back and ahead

Filed under: Stuff — Meanwhile @ 8:14 pm

It’s been a very good year for BeOS/Haiku as well as for myself in relationship to BeOS and Haiku.

Some old issues that I gave up on got solved this year: a pleasant surprise was Gerald Zajac developing his S3 Savage driver, which -on a Thinkpad T23- meant good video where before there was only limited VESA. Since this was the only thing lacking, his driver turned the Thinkpad into a perfect notebook for BeOS and Haiku…thanks, Gerald!

Somewhat more recent was the happy discovery of being able to use BeOS after all on a NetVista that didn’t run it before. I had tried to run BeOS 5 PE from within Windows, but ran into a known keyboard problem that occurs with some IBM Desktops.

I equipped it with a new Hard Disk (for another reason), and decided to install BeOS Dano on a partition of it, not expecting any positive results. But DAMN, this time it worked!!

After installing a used 3Com ethernet card and also Marcus Overhagen’s AC 97 driver, everything works now…making the NetVista the 5th piece of hardware over here that natively and completely runs BeOS (with ‘completely’ meaning good audio, video and ethernet).

Another heartwarming thing was that I found a niche in the shape of some BeOS icon enhancement work. The Be-Beautified Icon collection -started this year- has given me lots of satisfaction while designing and it is truly great to see positive feedback and a nice number of downloads for it as a result.

I may add an icon for ScummVM, but there aren’t any more apps on my mind….though there is a concept of a WebPositive icon, in case that’ll be the name of the new Haiku browser. Anyhow, Stippi is involved in the project, so that means its iconic future is secured already.

What could be another niche for me to work on in 2008, may be something entirely different.

I was thinking of starting to “hunt down” and contact former BeOS developers, starting for example from BeBits. From experience it seems these people still have a soft spot for BeOS and are very co-operative.

The right moment to start this campaign would perhaps be after Haiku’s first Alpha version is out. An email address ending with ‘haiku-os.org’ would be ideal to be taken more serious.

Go Haiku, go!

Happy 2008 to you!

Time to summarize…

Filed under: Stuff — Meanwhile @ 4:41 pm

Quiet times ahead for this blog, so a tagcloud was made to summarize all up ’till now.
(I expect only some 2007 review will be written around New Year, but not much more…)

BBI: all icons ready, CoveredCalc dropped out

Filed under: Graphics — Meanwhile @ 8:58 pm

Just finished the last icons for the next version of ‘Be-beautified Icons’…. apart from CoveredCalc (which I couldn’t get up to standard), all the others made it and now exist in their final 32×32 and 16×16 versions.
The (time-consuming) setting up of a Desktop for the screenshot still needs to be done, as well as uploading the files and writing additional texts for the app’s Readme and its BeBits page.

Alltogether, it’ll be published on Wednesday or Thursday (Friday at the latest)….prolly! ;-)

Update: Forgot to mention: Beezer and XRS icons got some improved details with this version

‘UniversalScroller on Haiku’ news

Filed under: Issues — Meanwhile @ 7:54 am

Sorry if you can’t be bothered, but for the sake of actuality of this blog (and of course because it’s such good news) I want to mention that UniversalScroller now should be working in Haiku !
This means that Haiku devs have fixed a bug relating to this…for which I’d like to thank Axel D. and Stippi.
After the upcoming version of Be-beautified Icons has been published, I’ll download Haiku’s latest build, test it out and write down the results here, maybe with an added screenshot.

Filed under: Graphics — Meanwhile @ 9:13 pm

The final icon that’ll be part of the next Be-beautified Icons version will be for Gobe Productive.
It already has its 32×32 version complete.
